Such spectacular weather

What in the world is going on in this economy. Federal rescue plan Bah Humbug. Is this what it was like in 29?

I got this weird letter today appeared to be handwritten asking of I wanted to sell my house and signed by a
Mary
who, I can't imagine. I'll pass it on to a woman on my street who is trying to sell. The one house that was empty from the lady who died got cleaned up, My neighbor changed realtor's and I saw someone looking yesterday. Took a week or so. The one on the next block is still sitting. Another next to it is for rent.

What is it about stealing copper and the cit of gold?

My aide had an interview today. I wrote him a really good letter of recommendation. Then they called for another job too.

He decided the library job doesn't pay enough, only 32K so he's looking at other things in the district. He wants to be in a High School.

He wants school v public cuz of all the holidays and weekends off.

He's about my height and 300 lbs. His girlfriend 100 lbs pregnant and 5'2. She doesnt work.

I may do computer lab after school for 40 an hour.

This bail out is making me nervious.

Beautiful weather

Gas is 3.71 a gal. and I need a tankful every 2 weeks.

I napped 6-11 read till 3 took a sleeping pill up at 7 asleep and up at 7:20 rushing to get to school by 8. Made it by 8:15. Meetings till 6:30 including one with the librarians from 3:30- till 5:30. I met with the principal and introduced teen read week, Next week I'll introduce it to the faculty then afterwards present it to a parent group and ask for some money.

I almost got to lunch today not breakfast either.

Rupert,my asst.. is interviewing for a full time position. He has a baby on the way and is getting married and I understand he needs health benefits for his girlfriend.

They live with his mom but still even with no rent there are expenses.

I read a really good book
Trunk Music
by Michael Connelly.

I've started Faye Kellerman's
Mercedes Coffin
It kept me up late last night.

I talked to my friend Caro. We're going to see the play House on Mango Street, in Spanish. I read it last summer. I arranged tickets for one Ell class to go see it on a field trip.

I was too late to get 150 tickets for the whole 1/2 of 7th grade.

Fall is here

I woke up this morning shivering. Got up chanhed nightgowns to flannel, put on my slippers, dragged out my down comforter closed a window and went back to bed and finally to sleep.

During the say the mornings are cool and foggy by 11-12 it burns off and the afternoons are beautiful with a slight breeze.

I get busy all day move books, turn on my fans in my office and in the library.

Today I proposed teen read week to the English and History and 6th grade teachers. Seemed to go over well. I want to do it in Nov before Thanksgiving. Every 1/2 an hour class comes in and a person gives a book talk for 15 min then another and the group can check out books. I need to get my circ. statistics up.

I lost a TA today. He transfered out. I worked him too hard and he took his ADD self out. At least he could shelve when so inclined.

One other TA an autistic girl in 8th grade was put in a mental institution lockdown for 3 days for safety and observation after writing about her harassment and thoughts of suicide. Sweet innocent out of place socially inept girl, Doesn't bother anyone and she gets so hassled and bullied.

Despite Ike

Gas was down to 3.79 today and 26 dollars filled me up.

Clara Dora cake was cute. Gwen made me a birthday cake too one Dec.

I used to love going to Hot Shios with Dad to pick out my birthday cake and get an orange freeze and Big Boy. :-)

NO Jury Duty

and I'm excused through through next year.

My review is coming up and the circulation statistics are down so it's my help. I can come up with ways to get kids i here but I need to get them to check out books too.

3 days

Still no call for the jury. I call back at 5. It's getting closer to my number.

Because they want to use the library for the ESL gathering I don't have to be here.

Tuesday, September 09, 2008

We're at Tuesday no Jury duty yet

Well fortunately I called on the right week. Not to do so was a fine of 1500. dollars. I've had to call in 4 times so far and they are getting closer but so far I haven't been called.

This is not working...

My ew assistant comes in at 7:30 and he leaves at 11:15 which means I take lunch betweem 11 and 11:30, closing the library for 15 minutes during 6th grade 4th period. This doesn't work. I haven't gotten a lunch yet.
Traffic has been slow so far because school just opened, so I have been able to eat something at my desk but, I'm getting cranky.

I'm glad today is Thursday and it is a short week.

Time to open the library to students

Well some kid started a fire in a bathroom today so we all evacuated. We stood out in the sun for an hour from 10-11. I need to bring an umbrella for shade, my water bottle, hat, sunscreen and the emergency bag next time. We had one scheduled for Fri.

I made blueberry scones yesterday.. It takes a pint to make them then you need more to put inside when you heat them up to heat.

I'm off a day because of the holiday.

Traffic is a lot heavier too in the a.m.

Relaxing

Coulf have gone to Bid Sur but frankly not going has an appeal. I nit the farmers market and the grocery store. Made a quiche, breakfast burritos and potato salad.
That's it. I'll swim and so some corn, t. chicken, peppers and eggplant.

My vendor for quiche and scones was not in the market so I may make some scones too with blueberries.

My medication for my face demands I stay out of the sun. The vitamin D demands more sun exposure what ya gonna do drink milk and eat yogurt.

Sat. a day of rest

I read the book
The Sons of Newport
and rested today.
It was nice to know more of the history behind, the cottages of 100 plus rooms on the ocean that were built at the end of the 1890's for billions just to show they could. They hung golden fruit on trees, had a dinner got dogs and treated the locals like servants.

John Jakes always does well in his his historical description. I like the town a lot and in early May it was not too crowded and still cool. I can imagine the crowds and the dock with the World Cup Yachts in port.

I decided I didn't have enough energy to drive 12 hrs up and back to Trinidad to see Marilyn for the Blue's festival in Eureka.

I'll swim and zumba and do swim aerobics here. I like to go to the farmer's market and now, the weekend is my only time.

Moving Books

Have you ever considered all the tedious stuff a librarian and their clerk do? You have to be organized and detailed oriented. I'm not. I can fake it most of the time. The majority of the stuff, cataloging, checking in, checking out, processing new materials, magazines, bibliographies for teachers, counting class sets for teachers and on and on.
So glad it's a long weekend.

The nice thing about the first week of school is that they throw in Labor Day weekend as a reward once you get through it.

I didn't go swimming this morning. I did wake up but figured I better sleep while I could.

I'll go this weekend.

It was still 70 when I got up. I'm sure it's over 85 now inside my library. It's not a day to carry and move books. I've got kids doing a lot of the lifting. i came in early this morning too.
The 1/2 and 1/2 I had in the frig has curdled it is so warm. Yesterday it was fine for my cereal. Today, it poured out solid, curdled in the frig and today was the due pull date. ICK!

There is a happy hour after school and I don't want to go even if the principal is buying the first round.

All I can think about is immersing my body in a cold tub of water or pool.

We have a lot of kids who didn't turn in their textbooks so I'm not checking out books to them. Legally we have to check out books but a little fear gets the books back or the fines paid.

O.k. I did go to have a drink at the last minute and stayed am hour; enough time for a Cosmopolitan and some bar food to sop it up so I didn't drive home drunk in rush hour. They didn't have a blender so no frozen drinks. I got my socializing in.

A lot of people were drinking different types of beer. Bar food is all fried and the virtuous stayed away from potato skins, french fries, calamari, fried cheese and zucchini. The only thing healthy was the orange in my drink and the celery that came with the wings.

I came in nuked 5 chicken terriaki meatballs and had some cheese and crackers and fell asleep.

S.H.I.T,

So happy it's Thursday. This has been a busy day. In addition they say it's going up to 108.
I put my sun glasses on this morning and don't know where my regular glasses are. As a result I've been wearing sunglasses inside all today and they are not "progressive', or may be they are but it's been a trial. I remember walking out with them on but I didn't see them in the car when I went back out to check.

I think I got progressive one's but I'm not sure. I've had to put them up on top of my head a lot and pull the monitor close to me. Makes for a crazy day. I have a spare pair but I like these best. I know I had them on when I left this morning. I forgot my cereal so I turned around and went back to grab it.

At 7 it was 70. I know it's hard for you all in the E to relate but usually it's 50-60 at night here. It cools off nicely. Some morning with the fog it feels like it's raining with the mist in the air.

It's another spare the air day and traffic was a bear. I've thought about hauling my bike to the train station and riding the train then riding my bike to school. Too much time and energy. I'sd have to pay to park downtown too.

I got up at 6 w/o an alarm and it was too late to go swim I need to swim at 6 so I need to get up at 5:30.

I felt so much better yesterday for having gone. Certainly I was whipped afterwards.

I miss being able to go to the Farmers Market downtown on Friday. Sunday or Sat. will have to do. It's so warm now my stomach is quesy. It was 95 and my fans didn't keep is cool enough.

Timorrow out principal is throwing a happy hour...buying the first round. I so rarely fo out. I don't need the calories but I need to socialize more. I'd rather go home or over to my friends' Carolina's.

I dd it!

I went to swim at 5:45, doubled my laps and got to work 1/2 hr. early, I felt great. It was a busy day and early release for kids. Then there were team meetings and a faculty meeting.

It was really hot today.

98 and hotter tomorrow. I brought in a fan I bought in 1972 Tomorrow hotter.

Took a nap......

The kids are back

Well not a bad 1st day. I had a lot of helpers to shlep things help put books out, stamp discards, unwrap c/d's, barcode, put on property stamps, throw empty boxes on top of the shelves, change overhead projector bulbs, check out books and all the rest.

My assistant doesn't want me to put anything on his desk. HA! His in box id full. He wants to use the work room which is very hot when temps are up and the laminator is on all day.

I found another hornet's nest and knocked it off a planter with the water from the hose. Unlike the other this was only the size of a quarter.

I hope to swim tomorrow morning. There is just no energy ar 4 and it's crowded
too. I almost went today, I took a muscle relaxer, massaged my back and took a nap instead.

Then, I watered the plants.

Last day without kids

We had one more work day a brief meeting off site and the rest was a busy day. I ran out at 1:30 for lunch aka: to the library to get some books on tape.

I slept till midnight last night was up till 3 watched the rerun of the Olympic closing and tried to get back to sleep. After 30 min. I popped a sleeping pill and was dead till 7.

My plan, since I'm spent at the end of the day is to get to the gym at 5:30 swim and shower and get to school by 7:30-8. We'll see how that goes.

I watched Kennedy and Michelle Obama at the convention. They were powerful. Quite a political machine.

Swimming

I was up at 4:30 this morning read and then went in to swim laps and do a zuma class, a Latin salsa aerobics at 7.

I came home then to knock my hornets nest off the planter. I sprayed it with water 2x last night and then wasp killer. There were still a few wandering around mourning so I decided to wait a full 24 hrs. like the package says. *Don't u just hate it when there really is a reason to wait and they were right?

I went to the farmers market and the library.

Now if I actually eat the veggies and fruit and pasta and sauce instead of letting it go to compost that would be better.

I've got the best garbage in town.

I'm resisting the pull to go in to school this weekend. There is a lot I could do,

I need the down time.

There will always be a lot of work to do.

Tool a nap.

Cleaned out the frig.
Filled up with gas and as Karen says it was a pleasure to be paying less. For me with 45 miles to the gal. it was under 30 dollars. That should last 2 weeks.

I liked going all summer on a single tank. Tells you how I stayed close to home.

Picked Cathy, mu neighbor's peaches for her. She could get the one's pm her side but not those on mine. I kept a few and returned a bag full. Beats the farmers market. She has apples too.

I'm watching the closing of the Olympics. I fell off watching after Phelps. It made for good back ground to grade papers by. I saw the Jamaica runner too.
Then the wrestler throw his metal down too.

Met another man today...
I'm wondering if Armando is returning.
I may have dinner with him and get to know him a bit.

No school!

SmileyCentral.com

I woke up at 3 a.m. rested. I must have passed out again lazy night. I don't remember when, but I feel rested and finally my feet don't hurt. If the pool was open now I'd go swim and shower there. I have to go in the mornings because after work there is no way I can do anything right bow bur collapse. I will put my aerobics tape on to stretch my back. A first step.

At school, the 49ers have donated lots of equipment, free weights and treadmills, If I had the energy I'd use the treadmill there room especially after school, but my feet at the end of the day are swollen and throbbing and all I can think about is to put them up and lie down.

My new haircut is so short that I wake up with it standing up all over from bedhead. Last night while watering on the deck I had the bright idea to wash it out there with the warm water from the hose. Not! As I stood naked and got my hair all wet, I decided it was not my best idea. That water was cold ~ and by 5 the patches of sun were few. Sometimes my ideas are crazy and not well thought out. I knew the water would be cold. I dried my hair, wrapped in a towel and went inside. It must have been some rime after that I leapt into slumber, I remember eating and then nothing after 7.

You may ask why not just step into the shower...well the huge shower in the master bath is where I keep Lacy's litter box. Today, I'm going to sweep it out and put her box in the garage. It's time to shower again and forgo baths for quick rinse. We are on water rationing.

Went to the gym to swim and water exercise and learned to do a flip turn.
Got groceries and in trimming plants discovered a wasps nest. Come dusk I'm gonna bomb it!

The week from hell

SmileyCentral.com

I slept yesterday from 4 when I got home till midnight then was up from then till 6 when I went to work.

Gas is down to 3.84.

Despite being very busy at work, I actually took a lunch today, a rare event, and went off campus a rare occasion. I've gone to this nearby Japanese restaurant before. I like their CA roll and asparagus and veggie tempura.
Usually I get there at 11:30 when they open, order eat fast and am back at school in 30 min max.
Today, for the first time ever, I went at 12:30 and it took an hour and i ate the salad and tempura there bringing home the CA roll and crab sushi and left over tempura for dinner. Well I learned the steam in the warm tempura turns it soggy. I knew that! You can't take it home but I ate the asparagus anyway. I like pot stickers not goza. I like the shape though they need more ginger or something.

So there I was this large woman and a man 6'7", 400 lbs., my estimate, walks out. You could have heard a pin drop. No one talked about it but you could feel the awe and awareness in the room. He was huge. There for the grace of God go I. It scared me. I can imagine how hard his life must be. I have trouble standing as does my friend Caro and back problems.

My friend Karen hates her diet but continues to drop the lbs. the old fashion way and its more than 60 lbs. now I think! Kudos! Take me along.

Soon my lunch will be at 11.

That's time for my breakfast. My aide leaves at 11:30.

I need to go food shopping. I went on Tuesday but was uninspired and bought next to nothing...cereal and milk, bread and a couple other things.

Tomorrow I hope to hit the Y to swim and the library and then grocery shopping and farmers market on Sunday. My neighbors peaches and apples are Ripe I may just help her pick some. Since her stroke lots doesn't get done.

I got in at 7:30 and left at 4. I could live there , there is so much to do. You'd find me shriveled up in a corner somewhere collapsed.

I misplaced my school keys today. They are on a lanyard somewhere in the library.

The kids come Tuesday, there is a workshop until 12 on Mon. and by then we need to have 980 books out x 3 for kids to come get. OW...my back.

Ill take a muscle relaxer and some hydrocodone before I out on a Lidoderm patch.

There is a great free concert in Golden Gate park this weekend and while San Jose was in the 80's but miserable in the unairconditioned library, the city is cool and at night is about 50 with a strong breeze. Very nippy.

It requires public transportation and a lot of walking. Since I can barely put my feet on the ground after today, I think I'll pass. I'm exhausted!

unbelievably busy

In addition to meetings all the teachers are coming to get there books. After lifting hundreds of lbs of books a day I am exhausted.

Rupert, my new assistant wants me to tell him one thing at a time. We need to multitask. We get constant interruptions.

It's so funny to evesdrop on 3 men having lunch. There was not one personal word the conversation was all about computers.
Women are so different.

My first senior discount

I went to get a haircut and saved 4 dollars in my first senior discount.

The first day of school was exhausting,

I read the last nasty notes frim my previous assistant and met my new one.
I
'm glad she is gone and he is there. Having someone pick away every day is exhausting.

Jury duty

It's not enough for school to start bur I got a jury summons today. The date is in thee beginning of September. The previous 2 times I didn't serve. One time I had to show up and was then dismissed.

starfish and snake and dog liver oh my....

I'd eat the grilled corn but the sea horses, scorpions, beetles and other assorted delicacies leave me examining my Chinese take out more carefully.

Lead me to the silk and pearl market to look at and shop for jade.

I'm about Olympic saturated.

Ah, Viva le difference...

School's out!

I have 5 days until I start again.

Gas has fallen to 3.97.

My Plantation shutters are to be installed on Mon.

I'm reading chasing darkness by Robert Crais.

Hit a tree

Armando called to tell me he ran into a tree. Not a good driver.

Gas has finally fallen to 3.99 here.

Arthritis

The dr. told me today that I have arthritis on my back.

I got the hated letter telling me I return to school on Wed the 20th of Aug. That's 5 days after summer school ends.

So much for summer vaction.

Emily is about to turn 36. Happy Birthday girl!

Gas is 4.05

Moving down

I filled up for 32.00 today. People are driving less. Me too this is the first time I've filled up in more than a month. Gas is down to 4.09.

Marilyn wants we to drive up after summer school. 6 hrs up... I may go to Big Sur instead.

I wish the gym was open 24 hrs. I would go at midnight or between 2 and 5 a.m. I know there are gyms open. I'll need to investigate them.

My neighbor wants me to dog sit. I don't want the dog in the house with Lacy, I don't mind walking and feeding him though.

My Fishers carmel corn arrived. It was not as good as remembered and Not worth 20 dollars.

Sunday, July 27, 2008

Happy Birthday Bob!

Official a senior now. Think of all those discounts. Mom never wanted to claim hers. I would I'm almost good to go at Denny's.

Over 15 homes have burned at Yosemite National Paek. They haven't had a fire in a hundred years so there is a lot of undergrowth to fuel it.

Today there was a Foundeers day celebratiob at the Peralta Adobe downtown. There were exhibits like Williamsburg of people in period costumes doing demonstrations like at the Mission. There were denonstrations making candles, torillas, brick making, weaving, roping, and making pottery --life in the 17 and 1800's.

A much better alternative to grading papers.

My friend Marilyn called from Trinidad. She said gas was over $5.00 there.

Went out to walk after 8 and it was cool out.

Musicals

MGM had That's Entertainment on PBS tonight. I love the stock film and the clips drom all thise old movies and the history from the 20;s on. Fad used to play Sophie Tucker and Ergyl Merman along with all the musicals. On my 3rd grade birthday, Dad took me t o see Mary Martin in the Music Man and the Ice Capades all in one day.

Needless to say I have always loved musicals. Mom said she could never understand someone breaking into song in the middle od a play. She is the one who taught me Bingo Bango Bongo and Mersy Dotes, Doe's eat Oats.

She drew well. Mom could put a kite together, do calculations for shelves...things that are almost beyond me.

It was hot today.

I went out for a walk late about 8:30 waiting for ot to cool off.

I made a pizza out of foccacia with sun dried tomatoes, added red pappers, carmelized onion, garlic, zuchini, yellow and green, mushrooms in sherry, basil, mozzerella and parmesean.

Now I'm cooking up eggplant, garlic and carmelized onion

No more trans fat in CA

Well the governator has passed the law like NY no more trans fat in fast food. yea!

I decided not to go to the Garlic festival and instead spent the 12 entry fee plus cost of food at the farmers market. I decided to get Indian food instead. I'm going to make lentil and eggplant too.

I figured I could make my own scampi. This way I wouldn't just buy calamari and all that other stuff I don't need and would eat too much of.

I'm still on my first tank of gas since school let out. It keeps dropping, I'll probably get some on Mon.

I usually buy some popcorn that is cooked in a hude kettle with sugar and salt. Hense the name, kettle corn.

Because I got an order from Fishers in I thought I'd wait.

I read a book, took a nap and graded essays. Tonight I took my walk.

S.G.I.Thursday

No class tomorrow just a ton of essay and vocabulary tests to glade. I've finished all the books to and sent the extras back to amazon. 1.2 was through and I got my for my pay check. I had some kids do presentations on their social issues,(boy 7th and 8th graders don't know very much), showed part of the movie
The Grapes of Wrath
.

I stopped for Vietnamese takeout of grilled shrimp and marinated pork, rice and salad with daikon and carrot.

I may treat myself to Fishers popcorn from Ocean city,www.FISHERSPOPCORN.COM,thanks for the reminder Gwen nod Michael. I get a big bad for 5 dollars at the farmers market but it's not the same. I'll go to the Gilroy garlic festival, I can feel the shrimp scampi calling; and buy a ticket to a concert at Mt. Hamilton, the top of the mountain observatory in Aug.

The concert is flute, strings, etc. under the stars. There is an observatory there. I took Angel up once.

I went walking tonight.

There is also an art exhibit I want to go to. Seems like the fall is a good season for movies too. O want to see the Richard gere mocie and The Traveling Pant's movie oit in Aug.

I'm reading
Spanish Danger
, by Sussn w-Albert.

VCR

I took in the VCR today and the movie played. It was mostly commentary, I expected the story.

I just made up the quiz es for my last book. which I had read before.

Today I started one class ON their MLK lessons ans we'll spend a week or so on that.

I just came back from my walk.

Now a little eggplant....to go with my gazpacho.

Michael sent me recipes for spring rolls and chicken satay. Spring rolls are a bit labor intensive and the celephane noodles hard to handle.

It's heating up again to the 90's after mornings in the 50's/
I got plantation shutters for the dining room/

I'm sad to report my friend Karen is moving back East to be near her family.

Oh well

I tried to show the movie
The Grapes of Wrath
today but the VCR that my student dropped on Fri. was not working. I'll take in one of mine tomorrow to show the movie.I hate preparing for one thing and having to switch on the spot.

slowly, I'm grading papers almost at the rate they are coming in only because some are not turning in essays, book reports time lines, pamphlets etc. on time. I've been lazy and read my own book each weekend.

The ants are still here they were in Lacey's treat jars today.

I made some gazpacho. last night I had green beans and halibut with mushrooms, sherry and garlic and ginger. The stray cat in the yard, Diablo, loved the skin.

Today I finished my small container of chicken curry with nan. I've got to learn to make them.

For dinner I had this Sicilian sausage.

I'd also like to know how to make lemon grass chicken.

Think I'll sign up for the cooking Thai class on W night.

My back was really hurting me the 1st 3 days of summer school so I convinced them not to close my workers comp claim yet. The patched to numb weren't helping either. The temps were very high and I couldn't feel the usual coolness either,

I have an appointment with the Otho Dr in Aug.

Under siege from hormigas

The ants have invaded. They love fruit. They must smell. I cleaned the kitchen and have never had them anywhere else until yesterday. I had some apricot, strawberries and cantaloupe for breakfast. I finished 1/2 and fell back asleep. When I woke the ants were here. I changed and washed the linen and today they crawled out of the laptop, books... whatever. yuck I went on a killing spree. I'm sure my karma will be affected. Squished ants smell horrible. I put out ant traps. no effect.

Apricots are gone from the market today.

I got some nan to finish off my chicken curry but there is a great difference between the fresh stuff and the stuff I bought commercially produced at the market today. Next Friday I'll get 3 and some more chicken, eggplant and lentil curry.

Last night, I borrowed my neighbor's dog and took him for a walk. It was company but I prefer solo or human walks better.

tIME to read my 2nD set of papers this weekend.

I did finish Clive clussers new adventure novel,
Plague ship
.
It was really good.

Now I'm OFF FOR MY WALK. It's been a beautiful 71 degree day.

I watered my patio plants, now the front tomatoes and peppers.

I'm thinking of signing up for a Thai cooking class

It's on w night

I like yellow curry though

Green Curry Chicken with Zucchini

Inspiration:
Quick & Easy Thai

Ingredients:

2 medium zucchini or 2 long purple Asian eggplants
1 1/2 cups unsweetened coconut milk
2 to 3 tablespoons green curry paste
3/4 pound boneless chicken thighs or breast, cut in big, bite-sized pieces
1 1/2 cups chicken broth or water
2 tablespoons fish sauce
1 tablespoon palm sugar or brown sugar
6 to 8 wild lime leaves, torn or cut in half (optional)
A handful of fresh Asian or Italian basil leaves, plus basil sprigs for garnish
cooked rice

Instructions:

Cut the zucchini in half lengthwise and then crosswise into 1-inch chunks; set aside. In a medium saucepan or heavy skillet, bring 3/4 cup of the coconut milk to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until it begins to thicken and becomes fragrant. Add the curry paste and cook 2 to 3 minutes, pressing and stirring to dissolve it into the coconut milk. Add the chicken and cook 2 minutes more, tossing to coat it with the sauce.

Add the remaining 3/4 cup coconut milk, the chicken broth, zucchini, fish sauce, palm sugar, and about half the wild lime leaves, if using, and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to maintain a lively simmer and cook, stirring now and then, until the chicken is cooked and the zucchini is tender but still firm, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the remaining lime leaves and the fresh basil leaves. Garnish with a few sprigs of fresh basil and serve hot or warm over rice.

Recipe Notes:
"Green curry gets its name from the profusion of fresh hot green chilies fortifying the curry paste, rather than from the color of the finished curry. Some say it is the hottest of all Thai curries, but curry heat depends both upon how a given curry paste is made, and how much of it the cook stirs into the curry pot. The classic green curry uses chicken with lots of golfball-sized Thai eggplant, known as makeua poh, along with a flourish of the tiny, fragrant eggplant called makeua peuang, which adds a unique herbal note to the curry. I like it with chicken thighs cut into generous chunks and zucchini or yellow squash, or some of both. Long purple Asian eggplant makes a fabulous alternative. The lime leaves and basil are lovely, but not essential to a great green curry."

My Notes:
The sauce was thinner than I would prefer. Next time I wouldn't add the chicken broth until I thought it needed it. I did like the flavor, and I liked the addition of zucchini to pack in veggies.

Spinach from our CSA and this recipe.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 tablespoon coarsely chopped garlic

8 to 10 cups loosely packed fresh spinach leaves (about 20 ounces)

2 tablespoons fish sauce, or 1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons sugar

1/2 teaspoon black pepper or white pepper

1/4 cup water

Instructions:

Heat the oil in a large, deep skillet or a wok over medium-high heat for about 1 minute, and then add the garlic. Toss well and add the spinach. Gently turn the pile of spinach to heat most of the leaves. (Add it in 2 or 3 batches if your pan won’t hold all the leaves at first).

Add the fish sauce or salt, the sugar, pepper and water. Toss well, and then cook, turning often, until the spinach is barely wilted and tender, 1 to 2 minutes. Turn out onto a deep platter, sauce and all, and serve hot, warm or at room temperature.

Recipe Notes:
"This is my version of the classic Thai dish, pahk boong fai daeng, made with pahk boong, a leafy, hollow-stemmed Asian vegetable known as water spinach. In Thailand, pahk boong is fried over such a hot fire that flames leap out of the wok as the chef toss the greens. My home version will give you most of the fantastic flavor without the unwieldy fire, using a sack of prepared spinach from your grocery store produce section. Forget how health-full spinach is for us – make this just because it tastes so good."

Mama Mia

I went to see the movie Mama Mia today after the farmers market downtown. It was so good and only 7 dollars v. 60 for the theater tickets and so much better. What a feel good movie. Its worth it to see Greece and hear Meryl Strep and Pierce Bronson, et al and see her jump on the bed.

I got some blueberries at the market and some wonderful Nan and chicken curry. Next time I'll try the eggplant or figure out how to make it and save 7.00. I forgot how much I love the market downtown. It gets me out of suburbs. I can't quite explain it, but I love going to the farmer's market.

There is also music in the park. I may go too.

I like jazz, r and b and easy listening and classical. I'll skip the rap. It was such a beautiful day today about 79. Wonderful.

I got a call this morning from the female assistant candidate. I left a message for her at work with a librarian I know that I couldn't talk to her but she was trying hard to get me and finally, I stopped screening calls about 11, plugged in the phone, and picked up and got her. I just thanked her for returning my call and told her that unfortunately I couldn't talk to her.

I was used to interviewing people calling scheduling the interview and not having a preset list of questions. Things are different. I wish my principal had mentioned he didn't thunk it was a good idea for me to see the people at the public lib. before I made an effort and it became such an issue.

I may bit like it but I want to know. I'd rather have the information than walk into a wall. I may not agree and may not heed it but I want to know.

Unfortunately, it's still in my craw.

I picked my first doz. Roma tomatoes.

I'm going to make gazpacho, a cold tomato Spanish soup with celery, peppers, garlic, cucumber, lemon j, chives, red onion, sugar, s and p. Served cold its good for summer.

I'm reading Jonathan Kellerman's Compulsion along with Steinbeck critical interpretations. Hopefully I can get a handle on the symbolism. It;s a complex book. who knew? "Not since Uncle Tom's cabin gas there been such a controversial book, banned from n.y. to CA."

Gas is down to 4.29 and there is one station in the bat area where it is 3.99.
Fortunately with only a 2 mi commute x 2 I have only filled up once since school got out.

I borrowed my neighbor's dog and went for a walk.

Interviewing

Emily's Ethan at bat

SmileyCentral.com

Michael forwarded this from the Lean Plate Club in the Washington Post. A cool summer salad.
It took me two days but I made this great shrimp salad with corn, green and red bell peppers, red onion, ginger baby spinach, cilantro, lime juice, lemon grass ( I added that) a tad of sugar and water in the dressing and boy is it good with a dozen shrimp. I can still taste some. A lot of work for a little but there is nothing fresher even if I did leave out the jalapeno pepper.

I went in at 8 to interview candidates this morning. Either I missed the detail in the email that said it was at the district office as my principal said or I subliminally blocked it. I went to school. I asked, I emailed, I went to the h.s. to get a tape, the v.p. who is the s.s. principal said she thought it was at 11 so i went quickly to the grocery and returned and finally the secretary told me it was at the d.o. I felt so mad.
I raced over and walked in at 11 after all candidates were gone to hear the wrap up.

The top 2 were clerks at San Jose Public so I thought I'd call or swing by to at least meet them. I told this to my principal. He said o.k.

I got to work and called each. One was at work and after school I was going to meet him. Then I got there and he was gone. I called him and we spoke for a few minutes. Kyle had spoken to him and told him not to meet with me and called me and told me I should not call them that OR meet with them. He said it was extremely unprofessional.
In the interviews there was an administrator and an union rep and the library head.(not a librarian) I guess all communication needs to follow a prescribed set of questions and not deviate per candidate.

Then, he sent me an email which said I am not to contact the candidates.

At San Jose Public this was true and when I interviewed at Santa Clara Unified it was with the principal and library assistant alone.

I was very angry.

My blood pressure went up 100 points. I was all red and felt like I could have stroked out. 20 minutes later my face was still red.

Then I called my principal back and told him that I would not meet with the fellow but I did not consider calling them professional.

So what do you do? I spoke to a librarian friend of mine and told him to cancel my message I could not speak to the girl but earlier I had asked him what he thought of her. I also know a librarian that works with the guy.

I wont follow up with him. (I'd like to though.) Isn't that what we do?

I better go for a walk tonight. My neighbors daughter has a new dog so now even more that before she's up for it.

I want to go see Mama Mia tomorrow or go camping again in Big Sur now that the fire's out. It didn't jump Hy. 1 so I hope it's still green, peaceful and beautiful.
I need the tranquility and I have a lot of papers to grade, books to read, including mine.

Boy is Grapes of Wrath a hard trudge, no irony intended. I need Cliff Notes and Critical Interpretations. I'm a tad ahead of the kids and have to explain why it is one of the best novels ever written. I have to take notes.

I felt much better afterwards the last time even carrying my groceries home.

I took a soak in the whirlpool. That helped and I played a lot of bridge on line.

Summer School

Keeping up with 5 books and 3 classes with 5 graded is hard and a lot of work.

I've got really good motivated kids and the classes are small but how do you teach 3 grades in one class? It's a challenge like kindergarten when you break each 4 into groups and helpers come in and you rotate.

I've also been staying up really late trying to keep up. Consequently, my schedule is off.
Fortunately if I go to sleep at 5 I can sleep till noon and teach 1:30-4:30.
Then sadly 4-5 hrs at home reading and prep that I don't get paid for.

Thank goodness it's cooled off.

Now to put out the garbage.....

Big Sur is open again. I hope the fire didn't make it to Kirk Creek.

Free slurpee day

I forgot I haven't liked them since jr. high. and 7 oz is tiny.

I read Of MIce and Men today In one sitting it was really good. I've been assigning it to the kids for a week now and since I gave them their first test on thurs. I figured I better get a copy.

I'M reading 5 books. If I can keep up there is no excuse for the kids.

I can do 6,7,and 8th in my sleep but it becomes difficult when I have 3 graded in one class and the
9.10 and 11th graders keep me on my toes.

Glad it's fri my day off and it's cooling off.

It was so hot I thought aout going to a hotel.

Last but not least our precious Wesley was born a year ago in a pool in his parent's home bathroom. Happy your here. How much you've grown!

7/7/21

Happy Birthday Dad. Wish you were here.

Today was the first day of summer school.

I have a reasonable class of 12 6th graders.
Then stuck into my 10th and 11th grade I have 4 9th graders and 4 7th and 8th graders. That's a tough mix.
Afterwards. I cool off in a small class of 7th and 8th grade.

Have I mentioned I don't want to be teaching s.s. However, they won't just give me the money without it.

We're having another heat wave. 105 in the shade and air alert, not healthy to be out.

Ever heard of a flex alert when you need to immediately conserve energy to avoid a rolling blackout. remember those?

gas went down to 4.43.

No fireworks in CA

SmileyCentral.com

Unless it's over water or in the city there is a big fine for fireworks.

I met with ladies tis morning for our birthday celebration this time for Peggy. The place and the food she picked was really horrible. I stopped at Starbucks on the way home.

Bob in back from the trip over the ice fields parkway. I love the Banff Springs Hotel one of those incredibly hotels, like the Empress in British Columbia.

Fortunately when I was there it was beautiful in early Sept. He got it hot.

Despite the fires and the earthquakes, CA is beautiful and rarely has humidity.

All of Big Sur evacuated

It's all burning.

I went walking in the neigborood. The hills are visable.

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

I didn't want to do it

The trick is to get up, put on your suit, jump in the car like you go to work and head to the gym before you have a chance to think about it.

Today I slept in till 10 after reading till 3. I finally got there after being spurred on by Michael as I thought of blowing the whole thing off,

I got there at 7. Boy was it crowded. I found the only parking spot did my cladd and all the treadmills were filled as were the showers.

Fortunately, I could see the hills again today so the air quality is better.

I stopped bu to leave food and water for the kitten and found she has a golden sister.

I need to call the humane society to get them. The neighbor said there were 3.

Some days are easier than others.

ding dong Carol's gone

SmileyCentral.com

I got a call from the ss librarian early this morning asking about the security system and she told me that Carol has transferred to an elementary school Yeah!

She knows a lot is very anal and efficient.

Once I was up for I've been having a hard tome sleeping at night, I went to my class then worked on the treadmill. I was to meet with the trainer too. The last one insisted that I needed a lot more time since the apt. couldn't be rushed through. This one didn't have anything else to say.

I stopped on the way home at the market passed my temptation, got only the essentials and stopped bu to feed the kitten and leave her milk on the way home.

I made this zucchini soup with onion and basil. I'm sure it's very healthy. I hope it freezes because there is a lot of it.

I made sole and eggplant in sherry with heir loom tomatoes for dinner with green pepper and mushrooms. For lunch a quick sun dried focaccia with peppers and cheese, apricot and cherries for dessert. Breakfast came with raspberries and rice chex.

The air is still bad.

Day Off

And on the 7th day she rested. Well I went 8 days in a row and today I'm not going swimming or walking. The air outside is still really bad. I went to the farmers market. I bought a pepper plant. I read and took a nap and did some into worksheets for next week.

I ran into my swim class instructor at the Farmer's Market and officially gave me the o.k. to take the day off if she took the weekend.

This may be the end of the cherry season too. Apricots still have a few weeks. Last night I made a asparagus and mushroom quiche

Today I may do a peach or nectarine tart. There was a good recipe on my blog link entertaining. I decided not to do a tart because I really don;t like crusts, it's extra calories and since no company is coming, I'll eat it straight up.
I also got 2 lbs. of zucchini to do either a soup or what ever the other thing was.

I'm reading. I'm having a hard time sleeping at night.

Last night I ordered part of the kids books. I don't want to get stuck with them. I ordered them early enough to get super saver shipping.

I would recommend they all go to the library and check them out. I have an order in for the breadwinner, which I read. I haven't read any of the others yet. I'll do a unit on Steinbeck and the dust bowl and migrant workers then during the 1930's and today. A lot of prep is ahead.

This is Gay Pride Weekend in San Francisco.

The gardener turned the switch on the hose so I can't put it back on.

On the way to the market this morning I swung by to see the kitten. She ate the food.

Hairspray

I haven't rented a movie in more than a year I had to update my credit card and I don't even know where the card is but for 4.xx. Beats the 10.25 in the theater or even the cheap 6 something. I rented Hairspray last night. It was cute. Not as good as Greece. (sic) Which seemed similar.

Today I went to the open house at school and talked my classes up. I have 10 6th graders signed up 16,7,8,and 9th and 9 or so 10th and 11th graders.
I can see it's going to be a lot of work. My 2 hour duty turned into 3.

Then I went to swim ans walk on the treadmill. Every day I do a little more.

I got into a fight with a woman who had her 9 y.o. boy in the shower and locker room. I told her it was not o.k. to have them in there and they needed to use the family changing room, she started yelling and I screamed back then went and reported her to the manager. My blood pressure really went up.

I scooted off to the movie at Biblioteca on immigration. I saw part of the 4 part series. It was really good...hum...ironic, well done, might be more appropriate.

I object to the vigilantes who patrol the border. I applaud those that give water and first aide. The coyotes scare me. They take 3k a head to help people cross and don't tell them what to expect.

I saw the kitten last night ans got some cheaper dry food today. The food from last night was gone.

The air is still really bad with a lot of particulate matter.

Bad Air

SmileyCentral.com

The health advisory is still in effect and will be until Sun. I went swimming and after class went to walk on the treadmill which give you speed, incline choice of t.v. or the rate I go I could read on the treadmill or bicycle. It was so boring even talking to someone.
It is really grey outside though from the fire. Eyes, & lungs they equate it to be like smoking... it's bad.

Heard that the insurance industry is kooking at a pay as you drive? The less you drive the less you pay. I'll have to investigate putting my bike on the train and riding from the train stop to school. It will take longer and I am not a fan of more time in the morning. I'm up at 7 anyway. That would probably take another 1/2 hr. and cost a train ticket to and from even wit a monthly pass. HASSLE. (exercise)

I was very slow getting started then went to return a book and pick up another on the way back. But I read
World Without End
already.
Tomorrow is the open house at school for 2 hrs. then a movie on immigration at biblioteca. A good thing to do to get out of the heat and air.

I heard today that gas would be 7 dollars in 2 years.

I decided not to go yo the Sierra due to heat and bad air. In addition there is a dry lightening advisory out. Then there is that backpacking factor.

Armando called last night. He's looking at driving back.

There are so many foreclosed homes people are abandoning animals. I may do some volunteer work with them.

Marilyn wants me to do it with mentally ill PEOPLE instead.

My friend P.J. from OR sent me a box of goodies he collected. Some for me and several for my students and stamps for their papers; one of a book.

I'm starting to get antsy being in the house with the windows closed knowing. I shouldn't go out.

I watched a new show, Hopkins, last night that I really liked.

Gas dropped ahain to 4.42.

No Fireworks!

Well the governator said no fireworks and some crazy communities want to sell them to raise funds, I say support those of the city that go off over the ocean or the Bay.

I met with the trainer today to come up with a personal plan and set goals. I gave her 45 min then left to get to my class and will return on Mon. so she can show me how to use all the equipment from weight circuits and bike and register my progress.

I should be well on my way to a towel by now showing up every day. This morning I got up at 7 but was moving slow and went back to bed for an hour after checking the schedule and watching the news.

At the moment for the next week this schedule works for me, It's the only time I go out and the only thing I do. Summer school starts on 7/7 and then I will still have the mornings to swim but I'll spend a lot of time on prep. and grading papers. Guess I better start shetching out my 3 lesson plans for 3 classes per day for a few weeks.
Uggg.....

Last year I slept in. I also spent time with Armando in the evenings. This year we'll see. I could also go after class but I doubt it. I will probably not be going 7 days a week. I may swim that often but the yoga or aerobics, treadmill and weight circuit will be 2 or 3 days a week. Right now I'm not sore. That's unusual with above the water exercises. I smell like chlorine.

With all this smoke in the air I may just walk on the treadmill inside tomorrow. The smoke is moving N and it will be around for the next few days.

The fire on Big Sur is 560 acres now. It doesn't sound like it's to Kirk Creek but the two fires have united now.

Is it everywhere that 7/1 all cell phones need to be hands free or just in CA?

Exhaustion

I slept in till 9:30 today with a nap yesterday. After my class and my laps when I pull myself out of the pool I feel like a thousand pounds and my legs are so wobbly. I came home and napped.

I went on my walk last night too. I sat out on the deck for dinner. It was really nice despite the haze and smoke in the air. We are in a valley and need the wind to blow through.

I'm wearing myself out and my skin is getting dry despite the lotion ans shower oil from the chlorine and soap even though it is OIL OF oLAY.

The kids are driving me crazy. they are so loud and so many on the other side of the pool that one can't hear the instructor. Then they scream and stare at you while you are changing. I am not tolerant.

The Big Sur fire is projected to go on for another 2 weeks and cover over 19 k acres. I see the governator is where I was at Andrew Morea state park. I should check on Yosemite. My window for this week is gone.

I have 2 appointments tomorrow. One at 9 at the Y with a trainer, info. person and the other with a designer to contemplate shaded for the dining room.

I put blinds in the kitchen and the office.

I replaced my drapes after 28 years. They were hung by me and have to be tweeked lowered and were very expensive for 4 windows in the dining room and 3 in the living room...like 3k or so. They offered to hang them for 500 dollars. I said no. They seem old fashioned to me. I want to look at blinds or plantation shutters.

The one's I got for the 3 windows in the kitchen and one in my office were 50 percent off Llevoler at Penny's.

I want to see Mama Mia the movie which opens in July.

My r knee still hurts. No yoga on that knee I can't kneel on it even on a pillow on the bed. It's been over a week. 13 days.

We're being told to stay inside, close windows and I'm going to walk. There is a health advisory out. It's really cool. I need sweats and my fleece jacket. Temps in the 60's and dueing the day 80's

While I was on my walk I noticed a black and white kitten in front of a house. The house was vacant and the a note on the door said it was owed by the bank. I was concerned that they abandoned the kitten. I went home took some water and dry food and went back. I ran into a neighbor around the corner and she said that there were three. She had put food out too. I went around the corner and up 3 houses and saw the baby across the street. I rattled the dry food and it came running, keeping well away from me. We need to trap them and spay them.

I got an Amazon Business Visa to purchase all my supplemental readers for summer school. They will give me 30 dollars free then I'll go back to my United Visa to collect miles.

Oprah's Dr says if you eat 11 lbs of fruits and veggies a day you will lose weight, not be hungry, lower cholesterol and .... I believe it all that fiber.

Let's see I had cherries, strawberries, mushrooms, apricots, tomato, lettuce, avocado, and carrot. I had sushi for dinner and a tuna spinach wrap for lunch. I need to eat more beet top and spinach and cook my beets.

Fire

SmileyCentral.com

More than 5 thousand acres burned. and still going, they were bringing in fire trucks and bulldozer's as I was driving out. There is a 2nd fire too three miles apart. They are about to merge. The tinder dry West. It's smoky and visibility is really low.

Things I would have missed:
toilet paper (but I got some in Castroville at the Giant Artichoke. I used to get a bag of frozen srtichoke hearts to take home but I had enough.)
my toothbrush and tooth paste
a brush
my bed
private bathroom
light
hot water
a stove
on the other hand no pans is easier packing.

What I learned:

to check road conditions.
to go and enjoy this incredible area more.
book at the Yosemite or Kings Canyon high sierra camp with hot meals, not freeze dried and cots, sheets already there.

My aqua activity class was good. My arms are always tired first. There were arm float things like weights that you push under the water they were good. I ran the entire time too.
Before class started I swam laps for 1/2/ an hour. It's a lot easier with my mask. A;as. can see the rubber strain from the salt water and metal crust. Pulling myself out of the pool I was exhausted.

Then I changed and went to a yoga cass. I'm nuts. Maybe I could do aerobics better.

I'm really out of shape an inflexible. I cant touch my toes much less than hold them. I took my mat but need a belt? You loop it around your feet to keep them together?

Ever heard of bogo? It's this blue 1/2/ ball thing that you bounce on. There's a class on that too. Got there at 8 left at 12. I might have overdone it a bit. Usually when I leave I feet energized.

The kids were there it made it really difficult to hear. LOT's of KIDS

I filled up again at $4.42 $18.00 for my trip.

Then there is the ten miles back and forth from the Y every day.

I walk at night.

It really cooled off and my walk last night was accompanied with my fleece jacket. I closed my bedroom window.

I planted beets and beans yesterday. I just can't turn the hose switch back on after the gardener left.

I made this great corn, eggplant, salsa to go with the salsa for dinner last night.

Going to the Y daily is costing me gas. My sojourn to Big Sur yesterday cost 18 dollars in gas and 2 for ice. That was 7 lbs.
I used to get frustrated as a teenager and mom would tell me that I didn't put the weight on over night I can't expect the body to improve or the weight to come off as fast.
Yesterday, I had cantaloupe on the road and a ham sandwich driving home, and some artichokes, a feta, spinach tartlet and the halibut with corn. I could only eat about 3 oz of the dish I was too full. I hot a really small piece but it was still 2 meals.

I need to get some more rice chex.

Big Sur!

SmileyCentral.com

What can I say..I love this place. I did not make the effort to go last year. The quandary...a tent and the ground.
Yes, I have pads, inflatable, chair, umbrella, lantern stove ...and it's car camping with water and a bathroom but...the ground! I've become old. fat and such a wuz.
Where is that intrepid backpacker?

Once upon a time I headed to the Sierra to Secret Lake in the fall and since it was snowing turned around changed directions, came home repacked my backpack and headed south to Andrew Morera state park.
There you park and it was free and you hike your stuff in about 1/2 mi. Now it's $10.00. I thought I was a Sr. there and at the movies but I see it's 62. There necer used to be a manned station now there is.

It was xlosedand next ti the fire camp. That was before I knew of the best place, Kirk Creek, that Kim told me about.

I'll be perched an a cliff over looking the Pacific. See Big sur images free...

My time is limited, it's now or August.

It took me awhile to find everything. Since I had help cleaning the garage, my tent was in one bog and the sleeping bag in another.
I finally got packed, bought 7 lbs of ice for 2 for the cooler. I couldn't find my stove, which didn't work well last time or my lantern. I think Gloria may have tossed my backpacking stove out like she did to my kite and skateboard when she helped to clean the garage.

Woke up thought it was 7 put on my swim suit then looked again oops 6. I was off to the pool. I liked the aqua fitness class and swam a bit after the 7:3- class.

I walked last night. It was wonderfully cool again, back to normal...60's. I read on the deck too.

I filled up 4 gal which cost almost 30 dollars and that got me to big Sur and back. It is simply the most spectacular place. When I live 2 hrs away I wonder why I don't go more.
I stopped in Castroville for fried artichokes and the weather dropped to the 50's.
The sea air and fog at 12. By 2 I was in Big Sur but was in for a disappointment for there was a fire and the road was closed about 30 miles from my site, the other campground Andrew Morea was closed and though there were people rafting on the Big Sur River you could see the smoke and smell it too where they turned cars around.

I stopped at the outlets on my way home. On that road too there was a fire at the pass.

Next time I'll check road conditions first although it was a lovely road trip. I'd rather be sleeping in my bed and there were no camp fires.

I could go backpacking in Yosemite....hum, I'll ponder that.

I stopped at a wonderful bakery in sand city outside of Monterey that was written up in AAA magazine, Sweet Elena's and got some mango chutney and a nectarine tart. Yum

Geo. Carlin died today...I saw him on a date at the Cellar Door in Georgetown at 18.

Up and at it

SmileyCentral.com
Woke up to go to the loo and couldn't sleep, do after 1/2 hr. changed the flannel sheets for cotton and threw a load in the laundry and opened my 2nd window.

I need to go swim between 6-8:45. Then to the farmers market.

A storm blew through, no rain, and brought some breeze yesterday afternoon.
I went back to sleep from 5 to 7:45, then to the pool to swim. After my shower where you hold the button in 40 times to do your shampoo, rinse, soap, face soap and oil I was out of there my 9:10 and to the farmers market where I got halibut and moon fish, strawberries and raspberries, Japanese eggplant, apricots, nectarines, samosas and nan.

I got home and the Gardener and I looked in the rafters for my scuba stuff to no avail. I found my tank below, but I'm still looking for my bag of fins, mask etc. I remember rinsing the bc, buoyancy compensator out and all the gear and the yellow mesh bag, regulator... I think it's in a black bag to keep it clean which is why all bags should be clear like I use now.

Somewhere inside I have some goggles even those would help.
Today it was crowded and the kids came at 9.

The lawn is cut, the agapantha trimmed, dropped fruit picked op, vegetation in compost bin,and pyracantha trimmed again.

Moon fish is really good mild and worth it. I cooked it with heirloom tomato salsa and sherry. I had a tab of basmati rice and a samosa. I've been getting sea scallops. I like this better.

It was in the high 60's again this morning. normal There was a touch of smoke in the air from all the fires and haze though.

Where the fire next to the freeway off ramp was, they jumped on it. It was down to a mow but not black.

Some of the heat lightening caused fires. we are advised to close all wimdows. I may go back to mall walking.

It never really cooled down

SmileyCentral.com

At midnight it was still in the 80's. I dragged the 2nd fan from the car, from my office and brought it in and on 10-2. When I opened the 2nd bedroom window at 3 it was cooler then at 9 when I woke up, very hot again. I closed all the windows. It must be in the 90's already. I had one fan on from 4-9. 100 expected. Hopefully, Sun will be cooler and Mon 80's...as I head to the coast where it it generally cooler.

The place I go is on the cliffs above the ocean. It's peaceful. Hopefully quiet too.

Turns out there is a Wachovia next to me at the shopping center where Wells Fargo was. All I need to do is open an act.

Think I'll head to the pool and then walk the mall. perhaps sex....IS Playing AT THE OTHER Nearby Theater. I went to the pool too early for lap swim so I got my picture taken for my IF and then went into a yoga class to stretch a bit.

Then I went into the pool where they told me I couldn't go in because the pool closed at 1? I wasn't having it. I WAS OUT BY 1. I'm, ONLY GOOD FOR 6 laps of varying style right now.

This time I had a comb, shampoo, conditioner a razor, bath oil, 2 towels & face soap.

I need my googlies or mask. I prefer my mask and snorkel because I can clear it and don't have to keep turning my head. My eyes are chlorinated even though I don't open them under water.
I'll have to climb up and get it out of the garage rafters with my scuba stuff or get someone else to. I opened the garage side door last night for a breeze and to take my redwood lounge chair out with the pads to the deck to read.

I', watching my cooking shows in front of the fan.

Ever add pureed frozen corn, melted butter and sour cream to corn bread?

Or a salt bed and red snapper with bay leaves in the belly, cover with salt and bake 29 min.crack the salt to dispose. won't be salty. cut off head, up spine, take skin off and get really juicy fish. If you want put a tad of olive oil and salt.

strawberries, cinnamon, black pepper, red wine, orange, sherry vinegar and later edible flowers like nastrstrums pansies or Johnnie jump ups to eat. (They are cool weather crops like snapdrahons and sweet peas though.

I headed to the library to cool off and watch a movie on immigration from 4-5 then to the mall to walk and see the movie. I really enjoyed Sex and the city but couldn't believe it was 10.25.

Gas is down to 4.44.

Happy Summer Solstice!

The city is opening cooling stations till 8. I went walking in my crocs last night at 9 and it was still warm. I rarely would go in flip flops but it seemed o.k.

I discovered Cheese its white cheddar Crisps. A lot of sodium but lower fat, 36 crackers is 70 cal. I like animal crackers too. For a 2.5 oz box it's only 120 cal.

I'm going into the Y to swim and then to make copies. Joined the Y and did the water step aerobics class and swam laps. I used to swim them far more effortlessly, I'll build up. It was a monthly fee of 58. and a 100 fee if you kept it up. I felt a lot better and tonight I'll walk.
They are open till 10 and have a 7:30- a.m water aerobics class. There are regular aerobics classes too. I;ll have to work my way up. I need to keep a gym bag again and a lock. I wore my swimsuit for the first time. I bought it 2 yrs ago. I took a tiny shampoo and conditioner and lotion but no soap only my razor. No comb.

Afterwards, I went and made copies of
grammar rock songs and exercises
.

Then I went to the library and got books for me and summer reading brochures for the 1-5 ones.

Stopped at the store for a cantaloupe and tortilla chips to go with my heirloom salsa.

Finally had breakfast of rice chex, less, with more strawberries and 1/2 and 1/2 and 1 percent....a compromise.

There was a pot luck today but I didn't stay. It had "bad" food. Most of the people were Asian, Vietnamese or Chinese and I assume retired. I have the summer to go in the morning and then there is probably a whole new group that shows up 4-6.

Tonight in Santa Cruz there is a free concert at the beach. I can stop in Saratoga and take back my chipped guaranteed Caphalon mug and get another and use my gift certificate from Marilyn's cup.

I think I'll go to Big Sur on Mon.

I want to go see Mama Mia, Indiana Jones and Sex and the City movies. It's been over a year since I wanted to go to any flic and not rent it. I may take a foster kid at school to the Indiana Jones movie. She helps me in the library. She's having a hard time in her foster home.

It was so hot I decided to go to the movies, see Sex in the city, stop at the p.o. in the mall and then the movie only I got there at 5 and the movie had 2 showings one at 7:4- then other later. So I left. It was light being hit by the hear from a blast furnace. I should have stayed in the book store.

On my way to the mall, I saw a fire on the next off ramp to the freeway just like I assume there was last year on the other side, It was RIGHT next to the exit ramp and flames were shooting up. I saw the fire truck arrive and the fire people get out. I was watching it in my rear view mirror while I waited for the light to change. I can't imagine people having that job.

I drove home avoiding that street and when I turned onto my corner there was a lot of traffic diverted, I imagine they closed the road.

It seems to me on reflection, I saw a homeless person pushing a shopping cart on top of the overpass looking back and walking away.

I stopped at in and out burger for an ice tea with 2 lemons slices. I'm tempted to go back to the pool.

I'm camped in front of the fan eating frozen grapes. Time to unpack the other fan from the car. It's going to be VERY late before it cools off tonight.

This morning it was only 70 at 8.

I'm reading Sarah Paretsky's Bleeding Kansas.

Water rationing

In the E bay water rationing is in effect. We didn't do enough voluntarily. Another fire in S.F. too.

Good Morning, it's a beautiful day in the neighborhood. I'm off to water mt tomato and snapdragons and plant sunflowers while the sprinklers water the lawn.

Today, it's still 91-2 out this weekend will cool I may go swim.

I hope the flodding stops.

Noticed the food priced going up?

U need another cantaloupe. I need to join a farm Coop...29. per boz whatever veggies are in season. 2-- saved per year. Then there is the beef. 2l for 1/2 a cow and a freezer for 300.??

I went to my meeting and he save me the leftover fruit veggies to take home. I came home opened an amaxon credit card and ordered 200 worth of books for summer school.

ice on them there knees

Oye Ve...I'm sitting at my desk with ice packs wrapped on my knees and moving a bit slower this morning. My neck, back, hip and KNEES are hurting. I don't like this getting old stuff

Today I started the day with a pint of strawberries. I have yogurt, cherries and green beans with me.
Last night I had some tilapia for dinner with heirloom tomato salsa, from the lean plate newsletter, with broccoli and cauliflower and cherry tomatoes.

Carol is out sick today and Friday. I have a student who got thrown out of school, whose mom brought him in and I have him rechecking the 6th grage history books to see if we missed checking any in. He left his in his locker and it's missing.

They won't let him in another school until he clears his record and he wants to get books to check out for the summer. So far no books found in Ancient Civ not checked in.... I'll give him a discarded science book but the others...I'll leave that to his new school.

I just changed ice ice on my knees...oh mercy....

Why did I come in to work today...to get some work done and curry points....not that I think it matters.

I have to move my holds over to the San Jose Library for the summer. I also want to sign all my kids up for the summer reading program. I require it of them. At least they get a book some stupid toys, programs and a pizza coupon from Roundtable for their effort.

Why do kids need rewards to read? I rode my bike miles once a week while we lived in Alexandria to pick up books during the summer.

I lost 10 lbs.

I stopped by Biblioteca to pick up sommer reading logs for my ss students.

It's about time to get a new bedroom and kitchen and perhaps cell phone. My bedroom phone will connect to the computer, I can talk on it but recently the buttons don't emit sounds. Having to go into the kitchen to call is the pits..

What an ass Bush is such let's destroy the coast and drill more. When is he leaving? 5 months how much more damage can he do?

It was 91 here again today. The tomatoes are growing. Tomorrow is my ss luncheon.
Tonight I had 2 pork tacos, carnitas, with cilantro, rice, lime and guac salsa and frilled onion with a radish chaser and broccoli and cherry tomatoes/

Tuesday...maybe the last day

SmileyCentral.com
I started the day with 1/2 a cantaloupe, and cherries for lunch.

I picked roses and agapantha for the secretary and attendance clerk before school, Gave the secretary an early birthday card and mailed cards to the retiring teachers.:-)
Then I promptly jammed the copy machine. (the big, fast one with all the bells and whistles.
I told the secretary, Annette and she snapped, "I just got here." (Well, I knew that)
I didn't need it fixed that minute, I just wanted to let her know.:-(

I have a student coming to work for an hour or 2 her penance for lost books. Who knows if they were, I was buried in books and kids were helping to check in and some were not accurately checked in. Then the principal came to see me to ask me what I had left to do and what happened with the book check in. DO I go and recheck in every book? Maybe so.
I finished all the science books.
The girl, Megan, was asked to take the stickers off the magazines and but them away in the back, Instead of peeling the date due stickers she peeled off the bar coses from all the magazines. Very well done, the were covered with a plastic cover. Now we had to rebar code them, re catalog them and delete the old barcodes. a lot of fun, So much for student help. She was helping me copy too and tried to take all 100 pages instead of the first 20. I wondered where the rest of the package went.

She was good at putting paper in the machine until the toner ran out.

Then I moved to the high speed copier in the teachers room and went through 4 reams of paper making 100 pg. grammar handouts for 60 kids. No fun. I "should" go in one more day. I jammed it again and Megan mixed up yhe 100 pages I was coping so whp knows what I have in the final sort. I do know, I killed a tree and have a bankers box filled with grammar handouts. I dropped them off at summer school to lighted the load in the car.

I may get 47 miles to the gal. but weight matters. It has to carry me. It doesn't need 100's of lbs of books and paper for extra days.

I stopped and bought croc flop flops on the bar home not exactly what I wanted, but the didn't have black on black canvas so I got black soles with a white and black print. Then I went and got another pair of SAS shoes W and 1/2 size wider. Then for krmon ice and to get some sunglasses with thin lenses and that thing to the tune of 430.
I vame home, frove into the garage around 7 gathered my bags and fell between the car and the garage wall tripping over a bin, onto my knees, I laid there and whimpered awhile looked for blood or help and when there wasn't any, pushed myself up on all 4's. I'm such having my flip flop's on and my hands full didn't help. At least the garage was carpeted and I had a pillow to put under my knees while getting up. Ouch! OYE!

Hurt and geeling sorry for myself I still went walking with my neighbot...now the whirlpool and ice. Felt better after the walk.

Hate that Thursday show Swingtown in CBS at 10.

Summer time and you can get a lot done without the kids

I'm reading Fearless Fourteen By Janet Evanovitch.

What a difference it makes not having the kids here. Except for one nasty email 2 phone calls from the same student my day has been pleasant and productive.

I'm almost done cataloging all the 7th grade new science books and Carol will barcode the rest tomorrow, stamp them and check them in and put them on the shelves in the book room. Then I delete the old 6th and 7th grade ones.

Karen asked....Armando is still with his son in Indianapolis. He says he's coming back and calls. All his stuff is here and I have his microwave at school and his t.v. in my family room and all his clothes in the garage, or 3 bags full and a suitcase and a few things on hangers and "the hat" el goro. Either he returns of Goodwill will get a nice donation.
Yes, I miss him. He is good company and enriched my life.

He didn't like any of my friends. They wondered what we had in common.

He did a lot for me besides clean, paint the house and do yard work.

I walked a little farther last night with my neighbor. I have a dentist appointment on the 20th and a luncheon on the 21st but until then I'll be free and may go up to the Sierras past Sonora, to Yosemite camping,to Big Sur or Trinidad.

Close to home for a day or 3 may be o.k. A little hiking.

I investigated joining the Y this morning.

It's $100. to join and 50 a person. They have a pool and water and regular aerobics.

I'm going some prep for summer school while I have a copier behind me and don't have to compete for space or fight the heat in a small room.

Gee it takes a Lot of energy to make copies and get organized. I copied non stop for 3 hrs. while I did other things. I've only got a little done.

A lot of prep is necessary to do 3 classes of 6th-12th grade I have some stuff from last year which will help. I hate the thought of being on my feet in that little airless room like last year.

I have my syllabus and course outline intro letter, autobiog assignment for all classes and a lot of grammar for 6th grade.

I prefer less grammar but he asked for it.

I also have a project of Martin Luther King and an scrapbook/family tree project done.

I feel like I have 6th-8th covered. The 9th-12 will take more effort. I have some stuff. Iy depends if I have the dame kids as last year or not.

I went for shoes and found I needed a wider and maybe 1/2 size larger. I'll get some croc sandles and some flip flop orthotics?

I'm going to look at croc flip flops too.

I went walking with my neighbor.

Happy Father's day!

SmileyCentral.com

To all you dads out there and to mine whom I miss every day.

I got up at 8 and started to go to the Farmers Market till I realized it didn't open till 9. Then I went and bought 2 2 ft. Roma tomato plants , one heirloom brandy wine tomato for 1 dollar, some tiny ones, apricots, nectarines, cherries, cauliflower, some salsa of heirloom tomatoes, humus w roasted red peppers, bread, a cinnamon roll, long beans scallops and tillapia and sole and halibut fillet. I wish I could grow orchids but I know I kill them and passed the flower stand instead of buying myself some sunflowers or iris.

The I went back to the market for cucumber, cherry tomatoes, basil, romaine, and more corn on the cob. I had two last night for dinner and they were so great that I decided that even at 2 for 1 i got 6 to cut off the cob and mix with basil and cherry tomatoes. 6 ears only equals 1c cut off and it's starch barely a veggie so go easy. (Yes, Michael this means you, but since it's perhaps the only vegetable you eat, go ahead. Try a pea too under your mashed potatoes.(mom used to hide them)

I got home cooked the corn, and long beans cutting them into 1 in pieces and then plunging them drained into an ice bath to stop the cooking while still crisp. I'll put them in soy and sesame oil and rice wine vinegar and chill.

I went walking last night too, Some people do it in the morning I prefer it when it's cool. It was cool till 10 a.m. Now, at 11 the sun is getting stronger and burning off the fog.

I was treating myself to rice chex with 1/2 and 1/2 and strawberries yum. Today i noticed that rice chex are whole grain which I don't mind but it ruins TRIX.

I guess it was time to stop eating those anyway.

Rice chex with one percent even with fresh raspberries wasn't the same. :-(

I'm starting Sue Grafton's new book. Nevada Barr's mystery was really good.

My mammogram came back clear.

My system is reacting to my switch to veggies and fruit after my fall off the wagon last week for BBQ potato chips.

M.H. told me that my maternal grandmother had a sister Anna who died as a baby. I never knew that. Too bad she dies so young of breast cancer. 38

Stephen, Kelly and Kerry? Wonder how they are doing?

I took a nap and then drafted my first handout for ss.

Let the fun begin...at least I talked myself into a 5 dollar an hour pay raise from last year.

This gig entails countless unpaid hours grading papers and prep. in addition to the paid class time.

Now at the onset I like it and I'm a little excited looking forward to teaching again.

I got this catalog of "orthopedic" shoes. I'm tempted to nut some flip flops and heel cushion orthotics to help with my obesity caused plantar fascists from them and am looking at some Etonic walking shoes and Savoney.

The laundry's done and I think my presoak, stain treatment and bleach powder stuff got out the stains on a new short set that I thought I ruined after 1 wearing.

I'm off to walk.

Poor Des Moines et al Iowa

Who would have thunk it... evacuating downtown Des Moines. I hope Mary Helen and everyone is o.k. She's not too near downtown. The flooding is not 31 ft like Cedar Rapids. Not to mention flooding and tornadoes. When I last visited with M.H. she drove out to show me the flooding then. This is their 140 yr high. see: demoinesregister.com Too bad Gwen and Michael don't know Mom's family there.

To think I almost bought a house here in the 100 yr flood plain.
Not to mention earthquakes.

Global Warming it's here...

And then IN. Oye Ve

Go hybrid

Despite a moment of insanity when I woke up during one of my numerous trips to the loo, I thought about booting up the laptop to go some view foils to laminate on Mon for my summer school classroom WALLS. Then exhaustion or sense or a bit of Leno at 2 I went back to sleep till 9.

Lacy was staring at me waiting for her treat. After a few minutes I got up, turned on the news, made some rice chex, boiled some corkscrew pasta for a cold salad and went out on the deck after turning on the front sprinklers to pull dried out vegetation from nasturtiums for the compost bin and put in stuff from the veggie bin. I cleaned out the refrig a bit, did some dishes, cleaned the burner where pasta water boiled out and finished my pasta with celery, mayo and some celery seed, red pepper and pepper. I took out the trash, turned off the sprinkler, planted sun flowers and peas and put out a un turned over full water bowl for the outside stray cats.

I think the black one is Diablo who I tried to socialize 2 yrs ago. He ain't having any but let's me get 6 ft. close. It took 2x as long as the girls to touch. He was just coming around when I gave him up. I guess he didn't get adopted and was put back out after spaying.

He fights with Brutus.

Off to the grocery and to get h20

oops forgot the water, cucumber and peppers I'll stop tomorrow after the farmers market.

I got some more flower seeds. maybe this time I'll water them.
LOL

Stoped for Chinese on the way home.

As soon as it cools off I'll go walking. Ya can't just take pills you have to move the body.

I've only got one and I made it like this. Now to unmake it like this.

Flag day....happy happy

Tim Russert dies of heart attack at 58!!!

SmileyCentral.com

Oh No! That's only 5 yrs. more than me. If he can go any of us can. Couldn't believe it.

Today is less busy cuz kids got out at 10:30. Can't believe all the hub bub for an 8th grade graduation, leis of orchids and candy and roses and baloons and yearboods like they were gold. etal.
I still remember what Michael wrote in mine...all 129 lbs of e..."to big fat dumb dumb Jane, go on a died and lose 50 lbs."
Loving brother comments huh? He was 19.Where did the days when we made tents over the t.v. and snuck our to the stables in Rock Creek Park go?

There is a party going on but I'm too exhausted to go. What I'd really like to do is float around in the pool.

I need to stop at the p.o on the way home.

I was up at 4 and couldn't go back to sleep. The brain won't shut off. Could have taken a sleeping pill but thought I'd sleep seeing I didn't nap.

Had breakfast, cut some flowers for the secretary, got here early.

Now I'm leaving and off to read and relax this weekend.

I dropped off some workbooks for summer school.

I need to resume my walking. I was ticked and ate and stopped walking.

I stopped to get gas at 4.51 a gal today and spent 35.00. That;s up 15 dollars since I bought the car.

Then I went home and transplanted tomatoes for therapy and watered plants.

I had not watered in almost a month.

Since I left an hour early today I was going to get some shoes, I need a wider shoe and my tennis shows should not hurt my feet midway through the day,

I made the mistake of trying to get Reebok by mail in a 7.5 W, they went back along with some shorts.

I have to try the shoes on.

My weight also gives me fastitis. My heel ligaments hurt.

In addition to walking and diet I think I'll join the Y and swim.

Busy

SmileyCentral.com

All the kids are coming in to turn in books and clear fines so they can graduate. While my able assistant was in sickout mode I was so buried I had kids helping check in books. Needless to say some were not done well. In 6th grade there were 13 language books and teachers are yelling and complaining to me and the principal. Carol took the 250 odd books and rechecked them in.
Need;ess to say there are others. A mom came in today and found 2. Great, Kids sometimes find them and I check it in and sometimes don't. Then I charge them. If the book turns up I will credit them and refund their money. The same thing goes if they later find the book minus a 3 dollar service fee.
The public library won't do that.

I turn in the money to our bookkeeper. I run a tally and then autosum. then she corrects it because excels total was wrong. I can't win.

I found our today that I have 2 extra days per diem after all the kids and teachers are out. swell.

Considering that the 7th grade science books arrived today I need the time to catalog them, and delete the old 6 and 7th grade ones. all a tedious pain.
I'm bit going to the end of the year party I'll be dead then.

Actually, I'd like to see her house....

Today during my 30 min lunch I went to the p,o., library, quiche shop abd froyogurt shop.

I'll be glad when Wed. comes.

Plus its 91 and there's another fire in the hills.

I'm reading Nevada Barr's Winter Study,

Counting down

I'm overwhelmed with all there is to do. I'm buried in checking in books. Having the kids help check in was not the best idea. Not all the books got checked in properly and I have to go and look for them.
Kids are coming to get cleared for graduation and field trips for Great America.
I have boys to help do the heavy listing. Sometimes they put things in correctly, sometimes I have to have it redone.
There is shelving galore to catch up on. I need to delete all 6th and 8th grade science books.
Carol decided to waive all small fines. I wouldn't. I'm pissed. Where does she get off making these decisions.

At least when I teach summer school it's a mile from my house.

Gas is almost 4.50 a gal.

Rare Form

My assistant isn't here today on the busiest day of the year. The kids turned in all their books and the locker clean out is this after noon.

The bitch couldn't have picked a worse day to call in sick or from her perspective a better one. I'd fire her for sure.

Today has been hell and it's only 1:24 and this is the first time I've had a break all day.
I left early yesterday to pick up some books. It was an early release day. My last chance.

Police Report

Well for the 4th time my car was struck. I've had my front l tire flattened 2x and the front l door keyed 2 times as well.

I am so ready for the 13th of June to be here. There are a lot of books to check in and put away and on top of that I have new art, science and spanish books to catalog.

I've been throwing kids out of the library left and right because I need the distraction not!

I think I'm crazy to have agreed to teach summer school.
