Moving down

I filled up for 32.00 today. People are driving less. Me too this is the first time I've filled up in more than a month. Gas is down to 4.09.

Marilyn wants we to drive up after summer school. 6 hrs up... I may go to Big Sur instead.

I wish the gym was open 24 hrs. I would go at midnight or between 2 and 5 a.m. I know there are gyms open. I'll need to investigate them.

My neighbor wants me to dog sit. I don't want the dog in the house with Lacy, I don't mind walking and feeding him though.

My Fishers carmel corn arrived. It was not as good as remembered and Not worth 20 dollars.

Happy Birthday Bob!

Official a senior now. Think of all those discounts. Mom never wanted to claim hers. I would I'm almost good to go at Denny's.

Over 15 homes have burned at Yosemite National Paek. They haven't had a fire in a hundred years so there is a lot of undergrowth to fuel it.

Today there was a Foundeers day celebratiob at the Peralta Adobe downtown. There were exhibits like Williamsburg of people in period costumes doing demonstrations like at the Mission. There were denonstrations making candles, torillas, brick making, weaving, roping, and making pottery --life in the 17 and 1800's.

A much better alternative to grading papers.

My friend Marilyn called from Trinidad. She said gas was over $5.00 there.

Went out to walk after 8 and it was cool out.

Musicals

MGM had That's Entertainment on PBS tonight. I love the stock film and the clips drom all thise old movies and the history from the 20;s on. Fad used to play Sophie Tucker and Ergyl Merman along with all the musicals. On my 3rd grade birthday, Dad took me t o see Mary Martin in the Music Man and the Ice Capades all in one day.

Needless to say I have always loved musicals. Mom said she could never understand someone breaking into song in the middle od a play. She is the one who taught me Bingo Bango Bongo and Mersy Dotes, Doe's eat Oats.

She drew well. Mom could put a kite together, do calculations for shelves...things that are almost beyond me.

It was hot today.

I went out for a walk late about 8:30 waiting for ot to cool off.

I made a pizza out of foccacia with sun dried tomatoes, added red pappers, carmelized onion, garlic, zuchini, yellow and green, mushrooms in sherry, basil, mozzerella and parmesean.

Now I'm cooking up eggplant, garlic and carmelized onion

No more trans fat in CA

Well the governator has passed the law like NY no more trans fat in fast food. yea!

I decided not to go to the Garlic festival and instead spent the 12 entry fee plus cost of food at the farmers market. I decided to get Indian food instead. I'm going to make lentil and eggplant too.

I figured I could make my own scampi. This way I wouldn't just buy calamari and all that other stuff I don't need and would eat too much of.

I'm still on my first tank of gas since school let out. It keeps dropping, I'll probably get some on Mon.

I usually buy some popcorn that is cooked in a hude kettle with sugar and salt. Hense the name, kettle corn.

Because I got an order from Fishers in I thought I'd wait.

I read a book, took a nap and graded essays. Tonight I took my walk.

S.G.I.Thursday

No class tomorrow just a ton of essay and vocabulary tests to glade. I've finished all the books to and sent the extras back to amazon. 1.2 was through and I got my for my pay check. I had some kids do presentations on their social issues,(boy 7th and 8th graders don't know very much), showed part of the movie
The Grapes of Wrath
.

I stopped for Vietnamese takeout of grilled shrimp and marinated pork, rice and salad with daikon and carrot.

I may treat myself to Fishers popcorn from Ocean city,www.FISHERSPOPCORN.COM,thanks for the reminder Gwen nod Michael. I get a big bad for 5 dollars at the farmers market but it's not the same. I'll go to the Gilroy garlic festival, I can feel the shrimp scampi calling; and buy a ticket to a concert at Mt. Hamilton, the top of the mountain observatory in Aug.

The concert is flute, strings, etc. under the stars. There is an observatory there. I took Angel up once.

I went walking tonight.

There is also an art exhibit I want to go to. Seems like the fall is a good season for movies too. O want to see the Richard gere mocie and The Traveling Pant's movie oit in Aug.

I'm reading
Spanish Danger
, by Sussn w-Albert.

The Gilroy Garlic Festival is coming up thus weekend.

an you imagine the gov. wants to cut state wages to min. wage?

VCR

I took in the VCR today and the movie played. It was mostly commentary, I expected the story.

I just made up the quiz es for my last book. which I had read before.

Today I started one class ON their MLK lessons ans we'll spend a week or so on that.

I just came back from my walk.

Now a little eggplant....to go with my gazpacho.

Michael sent me recipes for spring rolls and chicken satay. Spring rolls are a bit labor intensive and the celephane noodles hard to handle.

It's heating up again to the 90's after mornings in the 50's/
I got plantation shutters for the dining room/

I'm sad to report my friend Karen is moving back East to be near her family.

Oh well

I tried to show the movie
The Grapes of Wrath
today but the VCR that my student dropped on Fri. was not working. I'll take in one of mine tomorrow to show the movie.I hate preparing for one thing and having to switch on the spot.

slowly, I'm grading papers almost at the rate they are coming in only because some are not turning in essays, book reports time lines, pamphlets etc. on time. I've been lazy and read my own book each weekend.

The ants are still here they were in Lacey's treat jars today.

I made some gazpacho. last night I had green beans and halibut with mushrooms, sherry and garlic and ginger. The stray cat in the yard, Diablo, loved the skin.

Today I finished my small container of chicken curry with nan. I've got to learn to make them.

For dinner I had this Sicilian sausage.

I'd also like to know how to make lemon grass chicken.

Think I'll sign up for the cooking Thai class on W night.

My back was really hurting me the 1st 3 days of summer school so I convinced them not to close my workers comp claim yet. The patched to numb weren't helping either. The temps were very high and I couldn't feel the usual coolness either,

I have an appointment with the Otho Dr in Aug.

Under siege from hormigas

The ants have invaded. They love fruit. They must smell. I cleaned the kitchen and have never had them anywhere else until yesterday. I had some apricot, strawberries and cantaloupe for breakfast. I finished 1/2 and fell back asleep. When I woke the ants were here. I changed and washed the linen and today they crawled out of the laptop, books... whatever. yuck I went on a killing spree. I'm sure my karma will be affected. Squished ants smell horrible. I put out ant traps. no effect.

Apricots are gone from the market today.

I got some nan to finish off my chicken curry but there is a great difference between the fresh stuff and the stuff I bought commercially produced at the market today. Next Friday I'll get 3 and some more chicken, eggplant and lentil curry.

Last night, I borrowed my neighbor's dog and took him for a walk. It was company but I prefer solo or human walks better.

tIME to read my 2nD set of papers this weekend.

I did finish Clive clussers new adventure novel,
Plague ship
.
It was really good.

Now I'm OFF FOR MY WALK. It's been a beautiful 71 degree day.

I watered my patio plants, now the front tomatoes and peppers.

I'm thinking of signing up for a Thai cooking class

It's on w night

I like yellow curry though

Green Curry Chicken with Zucchini

Inspiration:
Quick & Easy Thai

Ingredients:

2 medium zucchini or 2 long purple Asian eggplants
1 1/2 cups unsweetened coconut milk
2 to 3 tablespoons green curry paste
3/4 pound boneless chicken thighs or breast, cut in big, bite-sized pieces
1 1/2 cups chicken broth or water
2 tablespoons fish sauce
1 tablespoon palm sugar or brown sugar
6 to 8 wild lime leaves, torn or cut in half (optional)
A handful of fresh Asian or Italian basil leaves, plus basil sprigs for garnish
cooked rice

Instructions:

Cut the zucchini in half lengthwise and then crosswise into 1-inch chunks; set aside. In a medium saucepan or heavy skillet, bring 3/4 cup of the coconut milk to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until it begins to thicken and becomes fragrant. Add the curry paste and cook 2 to 3 minutes, pressing and stirring to dissolve it into the coconut milk. Add the chicken and cook 2 minutes more, tossing to coat it with the sauce.

Add the remaining 3/4 cup coconut milk, the chicken broth, zucchini, fish sauce, palm sugar, and about half the wild lime leaves, if using, and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat to maintain a lively simmer and cook, stirring now and then, until the chicken is cooked and the zucchini is tender but still firm, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the remaining lime leaves and the fresh basil leaves. Garnish with a few sprigs of fresh basil and serve hot or warm over rice.

Recipe Notes:
"Green curry gets its name from the profusion of fresh hot green chilies fortifying the curry paste, rather than from the color of the finished curry. Some say it is the hottest of all Thai curries, but curry heat depends both upon how a given curry paste is made, and how much of it the cook stirs into the curry pot. The classic green curry uses chicken with lots of golfball-sized Thai eggplant, known as makeua poh, along with a flourish of the tiny, fragrant eggplant called makeua peuang, which adds a unique herbal note to the curry. I like it with chicken thighs cut into generous chunks and zucchini or yellow squash, or some of both. Long purple Asian eggplant makes a fabulous alternative. The lime leaves and basil are lovely, but not essential to a great green curry."

My Notes:
The sauce was thinner than I would prefer. Next time I wouldn't add the chicken broth until I thought it needed it. I did like the flavor, and I liked the addition of zucchini to pack in veggies.

Spinach from our CSA and this recipe.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

1 tablespoon coarsely chopped garlic

8 to 10 cups loosely packed fresh spinach leaves (about 20 ounces)

2 tablespoons fish sauce, or 1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons sugar

1/2 teaspoon black pepper or white pepper

1/4 cup water

Instructions:

Heat the oil in a large, deep skillet or a wok over medium-high heat for about 1 minute, and then add the garlic. Toss well and add the spinach. Gently turn the pile of spinach to heat most of the leaves. (Add it in 2 or 3 batches if your pan won’t hold all the leaves at first).

Add the fish sauce or salt, the sugar, pepper and water. Toss well, and then cook, turning often, until the spinach is barely wilted and tender, 1 to 2 minutes. Turn out onto a deep platter, sauce and all, and serve hot, warm or at room temperature.

Recipe Notes:
"This is my version of the classic Thai dish, pahk boong fai daeng, made with pahk boong, a leafy, hollow-stemmed Asian vegetable known as water spinach. In Thailand, pahk boong is fried over such a hot fire that flames leap out of the wok as the chef toss the greens. My home version will give you most of the fantastic flavor without the unwieldy fire, using a sack of prepared spinach from your grocery store produce section. Forget how health-full spinach is for us – make this just because it tastes so good."

Mama Mia

I went to see the movie Mama Mia today after the farmers market downtown. It was so good and only 7 dollars v. 60 for the theater tickets and so much better. What a feel good movie. Its worth it to see Greece and hear Meryl Strep and Pierce Bronson, et al and see her jump on the bed.

I got some blueberries at the market and some wonderful Nan and chicken curry. Next time I'll try the eggplant or figure out how to make it and save 7.00. I forgot how much I love the market downtown. It gets me out of suburbs. I can't quite explain it, but I love going to the farmer's market.

There is also music in the park. I may go too.

I like jazz, r and b and easy listening and classical. I'll skip the rap. It was such a beautiful day today about 79. Wonderful.

I got a call this morning from the female assistant candidate. I left a message for her at work with a librarian I know that I couldn't talk to her but she was trying hard to get me and finally, I stopped screening calls about 11, plugged in the phone, and picked up and got her. I just thanked her for returning my call and told her that unfortunately I couldn't talk to her.

I was used to interviewing people calling scheduling the interview and not having a preset list of questions. Things are different. I wish my principal had mentioned he didn't thunk it was a good idea for me to see the people at the public lib. before I made an effort and it became such an issue.

I may bit like it but I want to know. I'd rather have the information than walk into a wall. I may not agree and may not heed it but I want to know.

Unfortunately, it's still in my craw.

I picked my first doz. Roma tomatoes.

I'm going to make gazpacho, a cold tomato Spanish soup with celery, peppers, garlic, cucumber, lemon j, chives, red onion, sugar, s and p. Served cold its good for summer.

I'm reading Jonathan Kellerman's Compulsion along with Steinbeck critical interpretations. Hopefully I can get a handle on the symbolism. It;s a complex book. who knew? "Not since Uncle Tom's cabin gas there been such a controversial book, banned from n.y. to CA."

Gas is down to 4.29 and there is one station in the bat area where it is 3.99.
Fortunately with only a 2 mi commute x 2 I have only filled up once since school got out.

I borrowed my neighbor's dog and went for a walk.

Interviewing

Emily's Ethan at bat

SmileyCentral.com

Michael forwarded this from the Lean Plate Club in the Washington Post. A cool summer salad.
It took me two days but I made this great shrimp salad with corn, green and red bell peppers, red onion, ginger baby spinach, cilantro, lime juice, lemon grass ( I added that) a tad of sugar and water in the dressing and boy is it good with a dozen shrimp. I can still taste some. A lot of work for a little but there is nothing fresher even if I did leave out the jalapeno pepper.

I went in at 8 to interview candidates this morning. Either I missed the detail in the email that said it was at the district office as my principal said or I subliminally blocked it. I went to school. I asked, I emailed, I went to the h.s. to get a tape, the v.p. who is the s.s. principal said she thought it was at 11 so i went quickly to the grocery and returned and finally the secretary told me it was at the d.o. I felt so mad.
I raced over and walked in at 11 after all candidates were gone to hear the wrap up.

The top 2 were clerks at San Jose Public so I thought I'd call or swing by to at least meet them. I told this to my principal. He said o.k.

I got to work and called each. One was at work and after school I was going to meet him. Then I got there and he was gone. I called him and we spoke for a few minutes. Kyle had spoken to him and told him not to meet with me and called me and told me I should not call them that OR meet with them. He said it was extremely unprofessional.
In the interviews there was an administrator and an union rep and the library head.(not a librarian) I guess all communication needs to follow a prescribed set of questions and not deviate per candidate.

Then, he sent me an email which said I am not to contact the candidates.

At San Jose Public this was true and when I interviewed at Santa Clara Unified it was with the principal and library assistant alone.

I was very angry.

My blood pressure went up 100 points. I was all red and felt like I could have stroked out. 20 minutes later my face was still red.

Then I called my principal back and told him that I would not meet with the fellow but I did not consider calling them professional.

So what do you do? I spoke to a librarian friend of mine and told him to cancel my message I could not speak to the girl but earlier I had asked him what he thought of her. I also know a librarian that works with the guy.

I wont follow up with him. (I'd like to though.) Isn't that what we do?

I better go for a walk tonight. My neighbors daughter has a new dog so now even more that before she's up for it.

I want to go see Mama Mia tomorrow or go camping again in Big Sur now that the fire's out. It didn't jump Hy. 1 so I hope it's still green, peaceful and beautiful.
I need the tranquility and I have a lot of papers to grade, books to read, including mine.

Boy is Grapes of Wrath a hard trudge, no irony intended. I need Cliff Notes and Critical Interpretations. I'm a tad ahead of the kids and have to explain why it is one of the best novels ever written. I have to take notes.

I felt much better afterwards the last time even carrying my groceries home.

I took a soak in the whirlpool. That helped and I played a lot of bridge on line.

Summer School

Keeping up with 5 books and 3 classes with 5 graded is hard and a lot of work.

I've got really good motivated kids and the classes are small but how do you teach 3 grades in one class? It's a challenge like kindergarten when you break each 4 into groups and helpers come in and you rotate.

I've also been staying up really late trying to keep up. Consequently, my schedule is off.
Fortunately if I go to sleep at 5 I can sleep till noon and teach 1:30-4:30.
Then sadly 4-5 hrs at home reading and prep that I don't get paid for.

Thank goodness it's cooled off.

Now to put out the garbage.....

Big Sur is open again. I hope the fire didn't make it to Kirk Creek.

Free slurpee day

I forgot I haven't liked them since jr. high. and 7 oz is tiny.

I read Of MIce and Men today In one sitting it was really good. I've been assigning it to the kids for a week now and since I gave them their first test on thurs. I figured I better get a copy.

I'M reading 5 books. If I can keep up there is no excuse for the kids.

I can do 6,7,and 8th in my sleep but it becomes difficult when I have 3 graded in one class and the
9.10 and 11th graders keep me on my toes.

Glad it's fri my day off and it's cooling off.

It was so hot I thought aout going to a hotel.

Last but not least our precious Wesley was born a year ago in a pool in his parent's home bathroom. Happy your here. How much you've grown!

7/7/21

Happy Birthday Dad. Wish you were here.

Today was the first day of summer school.

I have a reasonable class of 12 6th graders.
Then stuck into my 10th and 11th grade I have 4 9th graders and 4 7th and 8th graders. That's a tough mix.
Afterwards. I cool off in a small class of 7th and 8th grade.

Have I mentioned I don't want to be teaching s.s. However, they won't just give me the money without it.

We're having another heat wave. 105 in the shade and air alert, not healthy to be out.

Ever heard of a flex alert when you need to immediately conserve energy to avoid a rolling blackout. remember those?

gas went down to 4.43.

No fireworks in CA

SmileyCentral.com

Unless it's over water or in the city there is a big fine for fireworks.

I met with ladies tis morning for our birthday celebration this time for Peggy. The place and the food she picked was really horrible. I stopped at Starbucks on the way home.

Bob in back from the trip over the ice fields parkway. I love the Banff Springs Hotel one of those incredibly hotels, like the Empress in British Columbia.

Fortunately when I was there it was beautiful in early Sept. He got it hot.

Despite the fires and the earthquakes, CA is beautiful and rarely has humidity.

All of Big Sur evacuated

It's all burning.

I went walking in the neigborood. The hills are visable.

Tuesday, July 01, 2008

I didn't want to do it

The trick is to get up, put on your suit, jump in the car like you go to work and head to the gym before you have a chance to think about it.

Today I slept in till 10 after reading till 3. I finally got there after being spurred on by Michael as I thought of blowing the whole thing off,

I got there at 7. Boy was it crowded. I found the only parking spot did my cladd and all the treadmills were filled as were the showers.

Fortunately, I could see the hills again today so the air quality is better.

I stopped bu to leave food and water for the kitten and found she has a golden sister.

I need to call the humane society to get them. The neighbor said there were 3.

Some days are easier than others.
